My Story

The journey that led me to become The Other Bee Guy

Why I Do What I Do

“I believe that bees are not just fascinating creatures—they're essential teachers. Through them, we learn about cooperation, environmental stewardship, and the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Every time I help someone understand and appreciate bees rather than fear them, I know I'm making a difference.”

— James Caperton

My journey with bees began over 10 years ago, alongside my 25-year career as a school counselor in the Orange County Public School system. What started as a fascination with these remarkable creatures evolved into a lifelong passion and eventually a mission to educate others about their importance.

In 2014, a beehive inventor in Australia was working on a design for a new kind of hive that eventually became known as the Flowhive. I was one of his first investors. His goal of crowdfunding $70,000 was reached in 15 minutes and he eventually raised 12.4 million in 30 days. It is one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns of all times on any platform. Needless to say, it spoke to me and to many others. Once I got the invention in my hands, I acquired some bees from a local beekeeper and the journey began.

As a counselor, I've always been drawn to helping others navigate challenges and find solutions. I bring this same approach to my beekeeping services—listening carefully, providing honest assessments, and delivering reliable solutions that work for both people and bees.

The name “The Other Bee Guy” came about naturally. It started with looking for a user name on social media…The Bee Guy was already taken so I went for The Other Bee Guy. Also, when clients would call for bee removal services, they would often say, “I'm looking for that bee guy...” and I would respond, “Well, I'm the OTHER bee guy!” The name stuck, and it represents my unique approach that combines professional expertise with personal care and education.

My wife, Paige Caperton, has been an integral part of this journey. She has been a dedicated English teacher in the Orange County Public Schools for 21 years. Like me, she's an avid gardener and bee enthusiast. Her support and shared passion for environmental stewardship have been invaluable to our mission of educating the community about the importance of bees.

Today, I balance my work as a full-time School Counselor at Orange Technical College with my role as a honeybee expert for Alveole in the greater Orlando area. Together with Paige, we're passionate about urban farming, sustainable practices, and sharing our knowledge with the next generation of bee advocates.

Partnering with Alveole

Bringing urban beekeeping to businesses and communities

Urban Beekeeping Expert

As a honeybee expert for Alveole in the greater Orlando area, I help bring the fascinating world of bees to urban environments. Alveole is a social business that partners with organizations to install and maintain beehives at their locations, creating meaningful engagement opportunities around beekeeping.

Through this partnership, I work with businesses, schools, and community organizations to install and maintain beehives in urban settings. These installations serve as powerful educational tools, helping people connect with nature and understand the critical role bees play in our ecosystem.

The Alveole program goes beyond just installing beehives. It creates opportunities for workshops, team-building activities, and educational sessions that engage employees, students, and community members in the fascinating world of bees.

My Philosophy

The core values and beliefs that guide my work

Education First

I believe that understanding leads to appreciation. That's why education is at the heart of everything I do—whether I'm removing a beehive from someone's property or mentoring a young beekeeper.

Humane Practices

I'm committed to humane bee removal and relocation. Unlike pest control services that kill bees, I work to preserve colonies whenever possible, giving them a chance to continue their essential role in our ecosystem.

Community Connection

Beekeeping is about more than just honey—it's about building community. I strive to create connections between people and nature, fostering a greater appreciation for the role we all play in environmental stewardship.

Transparency & Honesty

I believe in clear communication and honest service. You'll always get straightforward advice, upfront pricing, and reliable results—no games, no hidden fees, and no unnecessary upsells.

Youth Empowerment

As both a school counselor and beekeeper, I'm passionate about empowering young people. By introducing them to beekeeping, I help them develop confidence, responsibility, and a connection to the natural world.

Sustainable Practices

I'm committed to sustainable beekeeping methods that respect the natural behaviors of bees while producing high-quality honey and other hive products. This includes minimal intervention and chemical-free approaches whenever possible.

Beyond Beekeeping

Life Outside the Apiary

When I'm not tending to bees or counseling students, you'll likely find me working in my backyard garden or wrenching in the garage.

I'm also an avid hiker and nature photographer, spending as much time as possible exploring Florida's diverse ecosystems with my family. These outdoor adventures help me stay connected to the natural world and remind me why environmental conservation is so important.

Community service is another important part of my life. I volunteer regularly with my local church helping to foster a better community.

As a person of faith, I strive to bring Christian values of stewardship, honesty, and service to all aspects of my work and personal life. I believe we have a responsibility to care for the earth and its creatures, including our vital pollinators.

James is so kind, knowledgeable, and helpful! He came out on the fly to check out our manufacturing facility and warehouse, which was infested with hundreds of bees outside and inside. He helped us brainstorm a bunch of different solutions to fix our problem while educating us on how we created the problem and what we needed to do differently. He takes his time, has a great attitude, and is a pleasure to work with. Thank you so much, James!
